What is a Fractional CTO?
You already know that CTO stands for Chief Technology Officer. The responsibilities change based on the size of the company.
- Early-stage startup: they may implement the prototype and hire the first engineers.
- Mid-stage: manage software engineers and high-level technical project management.
- Very-large companies: manage several layers deep (directors, managers).
- Every stage: set the technology roadmap, scale the engineering department, keep the culture healthy, and work with the rest of the executive leadership to achieve business outcomes. When it comes down to it, they are responsible for where “the rubber hits the road” for tech companies: getting technology created (or connected) and shipped into the hands of customers, delivering value to them.
So what about the Fractional part?
With the number of tools and technologies available today, some start-ups don’t need a full-time CTO. You can work with experienced, expert technical leaders for a fraction of the cost (see what I did there?). You get high-performing, high-leverage leaders that would otherwise be unavailable.
I provide technology strategy services as a Fractional CTO with a retainer model. Participation is limited. You can elect to be added to the waiting list if spots are not available.
